Narragansett students showcase 'Starry Night'–inspired art at June 15 council meeting

At its June 15 meeting, the Narragansett Town Council opened with a student art spotlight featuring work from the Narragansett Elementary School art program. Jessica Duramer introduced third- and fourth-grade projects inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, and several students described their pieces and techniques, including oil pastels, neon painting and cardboard-based sculptures. The council applauded the students and encouraged residents to view the display in Town Hall.

The students explained that classroom lessons on colors and shapes and hands-on materials — from oil pastels to plaster over cardboard tubes for sculptures — informed their pieces. ‘‘We made colors and shapes one day and then we put them on a paper and then we made it look like we were painting a paper with shapes and colors,’’ a student said during the presentation.

Council members called the students “tremendous ambassadors” for Narragansett Public Schools and recommended that the art remain on display for residents to see. The town manager and council encouraged family and community support for school arts programs and thanked the students for participating.
