The Sulphur Springs City Council on Feb. 19 heard public comment about commercial fire dues and voted to table the issue until next month, placing properties raised in comment on a temporary grace period.
Resident Vince Welty addressed the council with concerns about the way commercial fire dues are assessed. Paul Gregory urged the council to note that "they are optional dues" and suggested that, if councilmembers are undecided, it would be beneficial to redefine the ordinance in the future.
Councilmember Bill Middleton moved to table further action until the next regular meeting; Bill Medley seconded the motion and it passed with all in favor. Mayor Driver stated that "Vince Welty’s properties will be under a grace period until next month when a decision can be made."
The discussion clarified that commercial fire dues are not mandatory charges imposed automatically by state law but are an optional municipal fee mechanism; councilmembers signaled interest in reviewing the underlying ordinance before making a policy decision. The council did not adopt changes to the municipal code at the Feb. 19 meeting.
The item will return to the council agenda next month for further consideration.
