Athens EDC discusses municipal airport expansion but takes no action

Athens EDC members discussed options for the Athens Municipal Airport during the May 19 meeting but did not authorize funding.
During public communications, Chip Perryman spoke regarding the airport expansion. Later in the agenda City Manager Elizabeth Borstad said the City has a steering committee for the Airport Expansion Project and presented conceptual layouts for runways (4,500 ft, 5,000 ft and a full 5,500 ft build-out) with hangar configurations. Ms. Borstad also referenced an economic impact analysis from 2017 and stressed the importance of early EDC investment to position the project for future phases.
The Board received the presentation and information; no motion or funding action was taken at this meeting. The item remained informational, and staff noted that future consideration of specific funding or engineering steps would require additional study and formal action.
