The Athens Economic Development Corporation approved a memorandum of understanding May 19 to fund material costs for resurfacing a section of W. College Street that runs adjacent to Red Dot Corporation.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad told the Board that roads surrounding Red Dot’s facility have deteriorated with the company’s expansion. Staff obtained a contractor quote of $112,000 for the resurfacing project; the City requested AEDC contribution for materials, estimated at $58,000, with the City providing labor. The Board voted to enter into an MOU for the AEDC to cover materials costs.
The motion was made and seconded and recorded as carried unanimously. The MOU is intended to allow the City to proceed with resurfacing while limiting the AEDC’s financial exposure to material costs; final invoices and procurement steps will follow established procurement rules.
Next steps: staff will finalize the MOU with the City, coordinate procurement and return with any required documentation for disbursement of material funds.
