Brimfield Township trustees elect leadership, set budget and retain counsel at organizational meeting

The Brimfield Township Board of Trustees met in organizational session on Jan. 2, 2026 at Brimfield Townhall and completed a slate of leadership, administrative and procedural actions for the year. Fiscal Officer Jasmine Golden called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m.
Trustees unanimously elected Nicholas Coia as board chairman and Kevin Scott as vice chairman after motions from Trustee Sue Fields and seconding votes noted in the record. Following leadership votes, trustees nominated and approved township liaisons for departments and functions, including naming Nicholas Coia as Police Department liaison, Kevin Scott as Fire and Road Department liaison, and Sue Fields as Cemetery liaison. The board tabled an initial Administration liaison nomination before separating Administration and Zoning liaisons and subsequently naming Coia for Administration and Fields for Zoning.
Trustees approved a temporary 2026 budget submitted by the Fiscal Officer and voted to have trustee and fiscal officer pay set monthly as determined by the 2026 annual budget, noting the action was taken "per the ORC" (Ohio Revised Code). The board retained legal counsel to be used as needed—Greg Beck, Chad Murdock, Diemert & Associates, and Zashin & Rich—and voted to retain Chase as the township's 2026 financial institution.
Administrative details adopted included office hours, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. (excluding holidays), confirmation of the office location at 1333 Tallmadge Road, approval to use the Brimfield Township website and social media for statutory notices, the IRS mileage reimbursement rate of $0.725 per mile for business use in 2026, and a listed federal-holiday schedule for 2026.
The trustees also approved a 2026 meeting schedule (generally the first and third Mondays at 7:00 p.m., with several Tuesday exceptions listed). Multiple appointments and reappointments were approved for external boards and committees, including Portage Development Board representatives, Portage County planning and landbank committees, the OBWC Safety Council, the Regional Planning Board, the Central Visitors Bureau Board, and the Brimfield TIFF Board.
