LWCD installs first bee lawn under county lake grant; Kathan Lake District petition nears submission

At its June 8 meeting, the Oneida County Conservation/UW‑Extension Education Committee received updates from the Land and Water Conservation Department (LWCD) on a newly funded bee lawn pilot, Kathan Lake District petition progress, and routine budget reports.
Baerbel, an LWCD LTE, described the bee lawn concept (a University of Minnesota model that supports pollinators while remaining usable for recreation) and said a recent County Lake grant will support up to three bee lawn projects in priority watersheds. The first project has been installed in Three Lakes. Baerbel also pointed to an existing demonstration plot at the Healing Nature Center established two years ago and invited the public to an open house there on June 28.
Michele Sadauskas provided a status update on the Kathan Lake District petition, relaying information from Lake District President Ken Drake: roughly 60 signatures were tentatively identified as eligible and 42 have been returned, keeping the petition on track for a July submission to the County for initial review.
The committee received LWCD’s May 2026 Budget Actual and Invoices Paid reports as informational items. Upcoming LWCD events noted included DNR PFAS listening sessions and the June 28 pollinator site tour.
