Salem council approves community event permits and confirms design review appointment

During the March 17 meeting, Salem City Council approved two community event applications and confirmed a design review board appointment.
Council approved an application from Janet Keane for the Quakertown Super Kids Race on Saturday, June 6, 2026 (setup and event windows were described). The council also approved an application from Brian May for the Salem Super Cruise scheduled for June 11–15. Both permits were approved by roll-call vote, with the five members present voting yes.
The mayor (through Mr. Ty) nominated Melissa Thompson to fill a vacated South Lincoln homeowner seat on the design review board; Mr. Ty moved the appointment, Miss Bricker seconded, and the council approved the nomination on a roll-call vote.
Separately, the public services committee (reported by Mr. Ty) forwarded a request from David Schwarz of Salem Renaissance to designate a three-block area on State Street as 'Civic Way.' The committee reported signatures had been collected and recommended that council consider a resolution.
Council members also offered condolences to the families of recently deceased community educators before adjourning.
What happens next: The design review board seat is filled pending administrative processing. Event organizers may proceed under the approved permits and should coordinate logistics with city staff. The 'Civic Way' naming request will come to council as a resolution if formally introduced.
