St. Paul Civics Club adviser outlines student service projects to Salem council

Miss Emmy Prosco, an adviser to the St. Paul Civics Club, told the Salem City Council on March 3 that 18 students in grades four through seven will design and carry out community-service projects intended to benefit the city. "The students are going to develop community service projects to serve the Salem community," Prosco said when she briefed council members in chambers.
Prosco described four project categories the students identified: physical projects such as planting flowers and painting hydrants; digital projects, including digitizing local records; creative-history projects like dramatizing Salem's past; and research-and-advocacy projects to recognize local historical figures. She said the effort is intended to teach responsibility, leadership and civic engagement and that students will work with adult mentors to meet project milestones.
Council members responded positively. Mr. Weir and Mr. Ty volunteered to serve as mentors, and several members praised the club as a way to restore hands-on civics education in younger grades. Prosco said the students would present the results in this forum in May and invited additional community leaders to volunteer as mentors.
The presentation did not include requests for city funding; Prosco said the club is coordinating with city departments and community partners on resources and governance for the projects. Council members urged staff and volunteers to follow up so the students can finalize plans and schedules before the May presentation.
