Tecumseh council hears $1.32 million grid resiliency award, approves $703,869.91 power-plant pay application

City staff told the Tecumseh City Council on July 7 that the city secured a grid resiliency grant and is moving ahead on power-plant work while addressing storm-related outages and a recent water-main break.
City staff member Doug Goracke reported that “we were awarded NDEE grid Resiliency Grant, $851,358 NDEE, our match 467,919. Total $1,319,277,” saying the funding will be used for upgrades to the substation. Goracke also reported several storm-related outages, a 10-inch water-main break north of town, and ongoing work to install a tap for a cooling project and to complete the JCH transfer.
Council Member Lorie Topp moved to approve Pay Application No. 3 from Farabee Mechanical for the Power Plant Project in the amount of $703,869.91; Council Member Tyler Speckmann seconded. The motion carried with Council Members Lance Beethe, Brian Britt, Speckmann and Topp voting aye; Alicia Brommer and Travis Goracke were absent.
Goracke said Engine No. 2 is back in service, the city’s air permit for the plant is complete, and permits for new generation units are nearing approval. He also noted that a draft wellhead protection plan is ready for council consideration and that work on Cypress operating board installation is nearly finished.
Next steps: staff will continue permitting and substation upgrade planning under the resiliency grant, return any required contract documents for payment processing, and present the wellhead protection draft to the council for future action.
