Alma council raises pool wages, accepts clerk resignation and delays auditorium repairs

The Alma City Council on Aug. 19, 2024 approved a package of routine motions that included raising wages for swimming-pool staff, accepting the resignation of City Clerk Dawn McNulty and postponing action on repairs to the municipal auditorium after a mold inspection.
The council, led by Mayor Hal Haeker, voted to adopt proposed increases for lifeguard pay and to reorganize pool supervision. Treasurer Tashia Butterfield told the council the plan would replace a manager-and-assistant structure with two co-managers, set first-year lifeguard pay at $10.00 and second-year pay at $12.50 with 25-cent annual increases thereafter, and leave swim-team coaches’ pay unchanged. Butterfield estimated the change would increase the city’s budget by about $9,027. The council also reviewed proposed pool fees of $120 for a family pass, $75 for an individual pass and $4 for daily admission. On the wage motion (moved by Council Member Larry Casper and seconded by Tom Moulton), Casper, Moulton and Mayor Haeker voted yes; Council Member Chris Tripe opposed the measure.
Other financial and procedural actions included approval of claims totaling $141,406.15 for the period Aug. 6–19 and acceptance of the treasurer’s report. The council approved the AMGL Scope of Support Letter related to the city audit (motion by Chris Tripe; motion carried).
Mayor Haeker reported that Yellow Van conducted a mold inspection of the auditorium and found mold in several areas; he said the inspection identified a leaking roof as the primary source. The council voted to postpone action on roof repairs while staff gather more information about needed repairs and costs (motion by Chris Tripe; second by Tom Moulton).
On personnel matters, the council accepted the resignation of City Clerk Dawn McNulty (motion by Larry Casper; second by Chris Tripe) and authorized advertising to fill the clerk vacancy (motion by Casper; second by Moulton). The meeting was adjourned at 6:17 p.m.
