PAWS reports nearly 500 adoptions in 2024 and highlights low‑cost veterinary services

Representatives of PAWS Animal Adoption Center updated the Belfast City Council on Aug. 5 about services and community partnerships. Jill Parker, president of PAWS' board, said the organization serves 13 Mid‑Coast communities, provides low‑cost veterinary services including spay/neuter work tied to national rescue transport programs, and operates a pet pantry.
"In 2024, PAWS helped 469 pets find their forever homes," Parker said, adding that PAWS veterinarians performed more than 900 spay/neuter surgeries and distributed over 2,000 pounds of pet food through the pantry. Parker described partnerships with local social‑service organizations to house pets for people escaping domestic violence and noted PAWS is a no‑kill shelter.
Parker thanked Belfast for municipal contracting that helps the shelter reunite lost animals and said over 20% of PAWS adoptions and a substantial share of clinic patients are Belfast residents. She invited council and community members to PAWS’ Wiener Fest at Steamboat Landing Park on Sept. 7.
Council thanked PAWS for its work and for the service mix that goes beyond sheltering to low‑cost veterinary care and community education.
