Pomerene board to seek broader input before deciding on proposed four-day school week

On Oct. 10, 2024, the Pomerene School Governing Board heard the superintendents report on a proposed shift to a four-day school week and agreed to collect more community input before making a final decision.
Mike Sherman, superintendent of Pomerene Elementary District (4188), presented a compilation of pros and cons from a community survey conducted before fall break and stated that the results "showed the community was largely in favor of the 4 day proposal." The board asked that two additional surveys be made available to ensure broader participation; those surveys are to be completed by Dec. 8 so results are available for the boards Dec. 9 meeting. The board agreed to make a decision on the schedule change before the 2025 spring break.
Board members emphasized the need for wider input before altering the academic calendar. The superintendents presentation was framed as a report of survey findings and a summary of potential advantages and disadvantages; the board did not take formal action to change the school week at this meeting.
In other business, the board approved the meeting agenda and the consent agenda by unanimous votes. Lianna Contreras moved to approve the agenda, with Paul Walker seconding; the motion carried 5-0. Contreras also moved to approve the consent agenda, with a second from Don Fenn; that motion likewise carried 5-0. Consent items included approval of the Sept. 9, 2024 meeting minutes, ratification of payroll and expense vouchers, personnel items, and the FY 2024 Food Services school-level Annual Financial Report.
The board received an information update that the Student Council account balance is $3,014.55. The board announced its next regular meeting for Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024 at 6:15 p.m. in the Pomerene School Library. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 p.m. following a motion by Lianna Contreras and a second by Janelle Blaschke; the adjournment motion passed 5-0.
The superintendents report and the boards request for additional surveys set the next procedural steps on the four-day week proposal: two more surveys, compilation of results for the Dec. 9 meeting, and a decision slated to occur before spring break 2025.
