Hayden council hears airport, tree‑board and Arts Council updates

At its May 7, 2026 meeting, the Hayden Town Council received updates from council members and staff on several operational matters.
Councilmember Kathy Hicks reported that March flights at Yampa Valley Regional Airport were down about 9% and said the airport had submitted phase-one plans for a terminal expansion that the staff estimated would save approximately $4 million. Hicks said a request for proposals for phase two has been issued, the airport secured a $1 million grant for access roads, and a groundbreaking is expected in late May or June. Hicks also raised a question about whether local emergency centers cohabitate with animals and suggested staff consult Routt County (Mo Demorat) for clarification.
Public Works Director Bryan Richards described a $3,000 Tree Board grant intended to help homeowners remove trees that may fall on town property; the grant can offset up to 50% of removal costs and applications are due May 29. Richards added that the town will plant drought‑tolerant trees on the Sage Creek Trail and install drip lines at Dry Creek Park.
Councilmember Lisa Carlson provided Arts Council news: dance programming will be on hold for the summer, the pottery club has about 20 members, and the council is planning a cardboard regatta for Hayden Daze. Mayor Banks recognized Richards for his presentation on water quality earlier.
