Dennis Beach Committee sets Memorial Day openings, rolls out credit-only day passes at gates

The Dennis Beach Committee confirmed key summer operational dates and said the town'run beach gates will aim to accept only credit payments this season, a move officials say is intended to reduce QR-code ticket fraud and improve accounting.

At the committee's May 8 meeting, a staff member told attendees the beaches will open on Memorial Day weekend (May 24'26) and the following weekend (May 31'June 1), with seven-day staffing beginning June 7 and continuing through Labor Day on Sept. 1. "We open Memorial Day weekend, which is the 24th, 25th, 26th this year," the staff member said, and added that the town will publish additional event and sand-sculpture dates as they are scheduled.

The staff member said the town intends to make day-pass collection cashless at municipal gates this year. "We will be only, only, credit at our gates this year," the staff member said, describing the system as a tap/QR arrangement that will show a receipt or code on the back of the paper pass for patron records. Officials said the decision responds in part to social-media reports of third-party QR-code stickers and to prior signal-testing at beaches to ensure reliable card readers.

Committee members and at least one resident asked how the policy would affect independent food vendors. The staff member said vendors are not town-operated and most already accept card payments and Apple Pay, but clarified that the town gates themselves will not accept cash.

The committee also reviewed staffing and training for seasonal lifeguards. Owen, a beach staff member, said hiring for lifeguards and gate attendants is nearly complete and described a newly funded town training role. "We have a complete program set up," Owen said, noting the trainer will provide on-shift, 20'40 minute sessions and that two staff will share the training duties to maintain daily coverage. Committee members praised the program as boosting lifeguard confidence and readiness.

Other logistics discussed included the lifeguard swim test on May 17 at the YMCA and an orientation set for May 31 at the police station (Martin Room). The committee said concession stands and selected vendors aim to operate by Memorial Day weekend; staff said Legacy Group (vendor listed in contract materials) is scheduled to begin operations around that time.

Votes and procedural actions at the meeting were limited to approving the March 13 minutes (amended) and a standard adjournment. The committee moved and seconded the minutes amendment and approved it by voice vote.

Next steps: staff said it will publish beach-specific details (flagging, resident-only notices, and any temporary closures for nesting areas) and post instructions about the cashless day-pass system on social media and signage ahead of openings.
