Superintendent reports repairs, safety planning and shelter progress at Memorial Park

Park Superintendent Kate told the Memorial Park Board she restored the pond aerators, treated algae with safe dosages, coordinated temporary coverage while the ranger was out for health reasons, and finalized new personnel policies for the grounds crew covering breaks, phone use and grievances.
She said staff are preparing for the county’s Fourth of July safety briefing with Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and have drafted a streamlined special-event permit to require certificates of insurance from vendors. Secretary Liz summarized May revenue items (reservations, firewood, vendors) and said the park took in roughly $480 from reservations and vendors, $587 toward fireworks, and $1,600 in reservation credits for the month.
Board members received a construction update that the Joe Sanders Jr. family shelter is roughly 95% complete and a dedication is planned for June 27; donors have pledged three native oak trees to be planted. Park staff also reported that county commissioners allocated $40,000 to make urgent repairs to the 4‑H arena ahead of the fair, covering spray foaming, roof coatings, plumbing fixtures and other band‑aid measures intended to be completed in early July.
The board discussed improving access (grading a service road with millings), adding picnic tables near newly graded areas, and options for temporary signage and site protection during events. The board approved routine claims and moved to carry out safety coordination for upcoming events.
Staff were directed to continue coordinating with EMA on the Fourth of July safety plan, finalize vendor insurance verification in special-permit packets, and plant the donated trees in locations agreed with the board at or after the Sanders shelter dedication.
