RSU 63 approves up to $7,500 for blueprints, forms Holbrook subcommittee; playground replacement delayed

The RSU 63 board on Oct. 27, 2025 approved funding for school blueprints, formed a subcommittee to study a Holbrook entrance reconfiguration and accepted donations to support Holbrook playground improvements.
The ACE (Advisory Committee on Efficiency) subcommittee requested an additional $2,500 to obtain blueprints/floor plans for district buildings. Chip Haskell, ACE chair, told trustees that blueprints and floor plans are the same and that the deliverables would be both digital and paper. Board members questioned whether the $5,000 originally approved had been budgeted and where the additional $2,500 would come from; the motion by Rachel Downs, seconded by Brittany Wood, to approve up to $2,500 more (for a total not to exceed $7,500) passed unanimously.
Interim Superintendent Sheila Caldwell provided an update on the Holbrook entrance reconfiguration, reviewing estimated costs and available Gloria MacKenzie Grant funds and stating that the district currently lacks sufficient funds to complete the project. The board voted 8–0 to table the reconfiguration while forming a Holbrook entrance subcommittee to explore options; volunteers were Linda Graban, Rachel Downs and Brittany Wood. Teacher Nathan Dusablon asked the board to include staff on the committee.
Facilities Manager Ryan Porter reported that the old swingset at Holbrook was condemned and removed after inspection; Heather Lander said replacement is delayed because of cost and that donations are being sought, with installation likely deferred until spring.
The board also accepted a $10,000 donation from Maine Military Supply for the Holbrook playground and a $100 donation from Fitch Property Management covering 20 tickets to the Holbrook Halloween dance. Nathan Dusablon said the PTG raised more than $800 for 8th-grade activities.
Personnel items approved included the resignation of bus driver Keith Wheaton and appointments of Kayla Ouellette (Ed Tech II, RTI), Brenda Seavey (assistant cook), Gene Worster (boys A & B basketball coach) and Dennis Whitney (girls B basketball coach). The board listed multiple open searches for central-office and instructional roles.
Next steps: ACE will proceed with blueprints; the Holbrook subcommittee will develop options and report back to the board.
