Historic-district commission approves most applications; one solar case continues

The Old Kings Highway Regional Historic District Commission met in Dennis and approved a series of routine and longer-running applications, including signage, decks, fences, a two-car garage and multiple residential solar installations.

The meeting began with procedural items and approval of minutes. The commission then considered 15 applications; the board approved most items either unanimously or by majority vote and continued one solar application for a later hearing because the applicant was absent.

Commission actions at a glance: 1) 25 West Wind Drive: second-floor addition and removal of a nonfunctional rear chimney — approved after the project's architect described a modest stair-tower addition and matching materials (motion moved by Committee member (S3); seconded by Committee member (S4)). 2) 97 Shore Drive (Dennis): 10 black-on-black solar panels on the rear of the home — approved. 3) 90 Bleak House Circle: retaining wall replacement using Belgard pavers on the same footprint — approved. 4) 194 Setauket Road (Dennis): rooftop/garage solar array — approved with one dissent after extended discussion about street visibility and roof color. 5) 49 Janelle Drive: deck (exempt) — accepted as an exemption. 6) Acorn Road solar: applicant absent — continued to the next meeting (May 28). 7) 11 Sycamore: solar in exempt area — approved. 8) 452 Route 6A: business sign for Capabilities — approved with guidance on dimensions and placement. 9) 125 Forest Pines Drive: six-foot cedar privacy fence — approved. 10) 37 Coles Pond Drive: redesigned two-car garage — approved. 11) 65 Jasmine: solar in exempt area — approved in applicant absence. 12) 700 Route 6A: reface and building sign for new business — approved with size guidance. 13) 63 Whittier Drive: deck replacement (remote applicant) — approved. 14) 667 Route 6A: building and freestanding signs — approved. 15) 202 Beach Street: deck replacement — approved. An additional solar application at 79 Country Circle in an exempt area was approved.

Commissioners repeatedly emphasized the commission's dual role: to support renewable-energy installations where possible while protecting the historic character of the district. As Chair (S1) put it during the meeting, "We try to approve as many solar panels as we can," but added the responsibility to "protect the historic look of the entire district." Several applicants said they had adjusted layouts or moved panels to reduce street visibility. Michael Tangi (S12), representing one homeowner, said the design moved panels off the main house "trying to make it, as, appealing as possible." Owner Jack (introduced during the Setauket Road discussion) said the family supported the project "because anything we can do to tell our kids and our grandkids that we're trying to help, slow this down would be a benefit."

Most approvals carried on voice votes recorded as "aye;" where a dissent or abstention occurred it was noted in the record. Where an applicant did not appear (for example the Acorn Road item) the commission postponed consideration to the next meeting so the applicant could be present.
