During the public-comment portion of the June 15 meeting, Washington resident Lindsay Camper asked the council to consider stronger local rules or enforcement for loud vehicles, saying late-night engine noise "reminds me myself of gang violence."
Council asked staff how the current noise ordinance applies to loud vehicles. Erin (staff) explained that the city’s noise ordinance is location- and decibel-based. The chief explained that while the ordinance covers certain localized nuisances, it is difficult to enforce broadly against vehicles (examples cited included Harley-Davidsons, dump trucks and other large vehicles) and that general enforcement against all loud vehicles is challenging.
Council and staff advised residents to report repeat, specific problems to dispatch (phone number provided in the meeting) so officers can respond to recurring nuisances. The council did not direct staff to prepare an immediate ordinance amendment at the meeting; members indicated that specific incident reports would help inform possible future policy changes.
