Mineral Springs board approves financial statement; superintendent warns of $51,000 insurance increase and reports cafeteria freezer failure

The Mineral Springs School Board on Aug. 26 approved the district's financial statement and heard staff reports on insurance, federal funds, a cafeteria equipment failure and changes to athletic admission prices.
District Treasurer Frankie Tollett reported the district's balances: a legal fund balance without certificates of deposit of $1,229,275.96; a legal fund balance with CDs of $1,302,302.23; and an all-fund balance of $2,116,407.94. Barnado Thomas moved and S. Kay Munson seconded approval of the financial statement; the motion carried 5-0.
Superintendent Amerson told the board the district expects a $51,000 increase in insurance costs starting in January and said the district has $70,000 in restricted federal funds earmarked for professional development. He also reported the cafeteria freezer went out in the first week of school and the district is using a cooling truck while the issue is handled.
Amerson also announced that entry fees for ball games will rise to $7.00 and that a season pass priced to an equivalent of $5.00 per game will be offered for local Hornet fans. The board approved the 2025-2026 co-op resolution, which authorizes the superintendent to vote on co-op matters for the district; Xavier Vaughn moved, Ray Hawkins seconded and the motion carried 5-0.
K-12 Principal Stacey Gaddis reported that the new cell-phone law implementation has proceeded with some verbal warnings during the first week of school and that open house went well. The meeting adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
