Council approves appointments, reappointments and a slate of ordinances including sign-code change and school resource officer agreements

The Washington City Council used its June 15 meeting to confirm a series of appointments and pass multiple ordinances and intergovernmental agreements.
Appointments and reappointments: the council confirmed Bill Mayhew to the Board of Public Works (term to June 2030) and reappointed members to the Library Board and Parks and Recreation Commission. The council also approved reappointments in the police department for three officers.
Sign-code amendment (ordinance 3B): council members discussed a code amendment to add a definition for neon signs that accounts for LED signs that mimic neon and clarified what constitutes a "backlit" (internally lit) sign. After the public hearing the council approved the ordinance on second reading by roll call.
Fire department participation: the council approved an ordinance authorizing the Washington Fire Department to join the Missouri Firefighters Critical Illness Trust and pool. The ordinance noted eligibility criteria for coverage (roughly five years of service and under age 70) and cited an estimated cost per eligible person; staff said the city would fund participation through an existing health and medical budget line.
Medical direction with Mercy Clinic: council approved an updated medical director agreement with Mercy Clinic East communities to refresh protocols and provider names for the fire department.
School resource officers: council approved agreements assigning one school resource officer to a group of parochial schools and three resource officers to the Washington School District; the agreements include a 5% increase tied to the city's starting police salary.
Boundary adjustment: council approved a boundary adjustment for Stonehaven Plat 2 to consolidate stormwater detention on a single parcel to facilitate a sale of the other parcel.
