Chair proposes six-month moratorium on A.I. data centers for Seward County

Chairperson Misty Ahmic told the Seward County Board of Commissioners on June 16 that information from a Nebraska Association of County Officials land-use forum had prompted the county to consider a temporary moratorium on data centers. Ahmic proposed a six-month moratorium specifically on A.I. data centers to give the Planning Commission and the board time to study land-use implications and draft an appropriate approach.
Deputy County Attorney Barbara Armstead cautioned that the draft should explicitly reference A.I. data centers to avoid ambiguity. Ahmic said she will work with Armstead to prepare the moratorium language for future consideration; the minutes record no formal vote on a moratorium during the June 16 meeting.
The board did not adopt an ordinance or formal moratorium at the June 16 meeting; the item was presented as a proposal and next steps for staff and the Planning Commission.
