Monticello council completes first reading of wellhead protection ordinance

Mayor Akers emphasized the importance of securing the wellhead and protecting the city’s drinking water, and Barton recommended recording a notice on real estate records if the ordinance is adopted.
Council Member Michael James moved to designate the reading as the ordinance’s first reading and to bring the ordinance back for a second reading at next month’s meeting; Council Member Craig McRae seconded, and the motion passed.
The first-reading action advances the ordinance to the formal public process required by local law; the council did not adopt the ordinance at this meeting and set the second reading for the subsequent meeting, where further deliberation and a formal vote may occur.
