Newington board tables new rules until Jan. 1, 2027; discusses station repairs, inspections and a mini pumper idea

The Newington Board of Fire Commissioners on June 11 voted to table adoption of updated rules and regulations until implementation on Jan. 1, 2027, after receiving several letters and noting the town’s rule that requires a 30-day posting period before adoption.

Commissioners discussed the condition of the Chapman Street firehouse (Company 3). An architect’s inspection was summarized at the meeting as finding the building structurally sound but in need of updates; because the building is listed with the historical society, exterior changes must preserve the historic aesthetic, and specific elements such as the flat roof and a later-added generator/furnace room were described as in poor condition.

The board set a tentative date for commission firehouse inspections on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.; the chief will coordinate with captains and officers to confirm logistics. Service 2 maintenance work is delayed due to heavy shop workloads; the town mechanic (Hermise) is coordinating scheduling for repairs.

Separately, the chief raised an early-stage proposal asking town planning and developers to consider providing a compact mini pumper for new downtown development with low-clearance parking. The chief said the idea is “in the infancy” but noted it could help operations where underground parking or 7-foot clearance limits standard apparatus access; the town planning staff will explore the feasibility.

The motion to table the rules and regulations until Jan. 1, 2027 was seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners said they will review letters that were submitted and bring any proposed changes back to the commission for additional posting and consideration.

Next steps: the rules and regulations review will continue; commission inspections are tentatively scheduled for Aug. 6 and the mini pumper concept will be discussed further with town planning and developers.
