Public works readied for winter as sewer repairs and holiday-lighting issues draw attention

Pawnee City public works staff briefed the Council on Nov. 24 about winter preparations, sewer maintenance and holiday-lighting procurement problems.
City Foreman Spencer Cumley said crew members prepared snow-removal equipment, serviced vehicles and planned to change pigtail plugs on two snowplows. Cumley reported a blower motor at the sewer plant had a failed leg; the crew expects to swap in an on-hand replacement and install a new sewer jet pump that arrived the same day. Johnson Service Company videoed sewer mains on 17th Street and behind Kerl’s Storage Units; that work coincided with a resident complaint about recurring backups in his home and JSC observed cracks in the resident’s lateral where it ties to the main.
Separately, decorative holiday lights arrived without the ordered GFCI plugs. Deputy Clerk Kellie Wiers and the Mayor said they have contacted the vendor (Tuscumbia) by email and phone with no response; Council suggested continuing outreach and consulting the City Attorney if the vendor does not respond.
Council asked staff to document repairs and vendor communications and to proceed with equipment and plant maintenance to keep services running through winter.
