Pawnee City approves Seneca Sanitation rate adjustment effective Nov. 1

Pawnee City approved continued service under the existing Solid Waste Disposal Agreement with Seneca Sanitation and acknowledged a late-notified price increase to be implemented Nov. 1.
City Clerk/Treasurer Tamela Curtis told the council the contract requires notice of rate changes by July 1 but the City did not receive timely notice. The company has requested a $3.00 increase, prompting the council to accept a revised disposal charge of $21.00 plus a $0.50 processing fee effective Nov. 1, 2025. Council Member Pat Hatfield moved to approve the agreement; Council Member Vickie Zelenka seconded and the motion passed unanimously among those present.
Council members recognized the late notice will require a budget amendment and discussed communicating the rate change to residents; options included a notice on water bills or a newspaper advertisement, with the council agreeing to defer broad outreach until spring when mowing season resumes and other notices are more effective.
The council directed staff to document the contract change and update the budget to reflect the higher solid-waste cost going forward.
