Kennebunk to pilot three-village residential composting with Garbage to Garden starting April 22

The Select Board on March 10 heard an update on a Garbage to Garden residential composting pilot that staff and the Energy Efficiency & Sustainability Committee plan to start on Earth Day, April 22.
Community Development Director Chris Osterrieder said the six-month pilot will test once-weekly curbside compost pickup in three village locations, funded from the EESC budget and supplemented by prospective grants. The pilot includes interactive pricing from the provider to show residents estimated costs for service. Staff intend to focus outreach on residents rather than restaurants during the pilot, and Public Services employees will support operations alongside EESC volunteers.
Board members thanked staff and the committee for the work. The committee plans a public workshop on April 21 to demonstrate composting and explain pilot locations and participation; the board asked staff to record the workshop for the town website if possible. The pilot will inform future decisions about scaling residential composting, site selection, and potential program funding.
