Measure M construction moves from design into demolition and bidding; district opens hotline for concerns

San Marino Unified staff told the school board on June 9 that Measure M projects are moving into active construction and procurement phases.
Project manager Jim Berlu reported demolition had started at Valentine Elementary’s playground and provided purchase‑order totals and pending contract amounts for several summer projects. He listed a $781,000 cost for the Valentine playground component, a $552,000 purchase order for the Carver playground shade structure, and an upcoming contractor bid of about $198,000 for demolition work tied to Carver improvements. Work on the San Marino High School athletic field and track, and roofing for the boys’ fieldhouse, were scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Berlu said general‑contract amounts for some projects were still to be determined because those contracts were out to bid.
Dr. Steven Choy said utilities investigations, geotechnical and hydrant testing are under way to support a possible student drop‑off area at Carver Elementary. Staff also said the district is establishing a dedicated construction hotline and robust communications (Measure M alerts and web updates) for residents to report issues or ask questions during construction.
The board asked for the publicly posted Measure M memo and noted that further budget and schedule details are available on the district website and in upcoming board materials.
