Select Board approves lease for controlled burn training for Readfield Volunteer Fire Department

The Readfield Select Board on June 30 approved a lease enabling the Readfield Volunteer Fire Department to conduct a controlled burn on a structure for firefighter training.
Fire department representatives explained that for training they must lease or acquire the building or the part of the structure they will climb on so insurance will cover the exercises. The department said the exercise is part of firefighter certification training and that the goal is to reduce the structure to an easily manageable pile of ash for disposal within the allowed timeframe.
A board member moved to approve the lease as presented; the motion passed on a voice vote. The department noted coverage under “MMA” for training-related liability and said two demolition-style ‘‘jaws of life’’ units were recently purchased for rescue operations and will be available for training.
The fire chief was directed to sign the lease and proceed with training logistics, and the department indicated it will return any donated or reimbursed funds to the town account as discussed in the meeting.
The lease approval clears the way for the volunteer department’s firefighter one and two training program to proceed.
