Council OKs breathing-apparatus purchase for fire crews and backs expanded F-35 pilot training

In separate votes on Sept. 8, the Greenwood City Council approved two public-safety and economic-development items.
Fire equipment: Chief explained that many of the department’s self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) components were at or below older standards and that parts and service for 2007/2013 standard units may be unavailable after year-end. Staff recommended purchasing 25 PSS7000-compatible backplates and face masks to standardize equipment across engines and ensure parts/service continuity. The council adopted a resolution to purchase the gear and approved an amendment to the 2025 city budget drawing on city sales-and-use tax funds to pay for the purchase. The chief said the 2018-standard upgrades should give the department at least a decade of compliance and improved interoperability.
Military support: Council also unanimously approved a resolution expressing community support for a proposed expansion of F-35 pilot training operations, noting the local economic benefits and that a draft supplemental environmental impact statement had been provided to council members. Council members said the community has previously supported the air-base expansion and agreed to send certified copies of the resolution to appropriate federal contacts.
What’s next: Staff will execute the SCBA purchase under the adopted resolution and complete the budget amendment process; certified resolutions regarding the F-35 training proposal will be forwarded to federal partners as requested.
