Fire Chief Sprague Wise outlined a proposal April 27 for the addition of a full-time firefighter to Carrabassett Valley's roster.
Wise said full-time firefighters would be scheduled for 10-hour days Monday'Thursday, while per-diem firefighters would cover Friday through Sunday. He told the board the town would be responsible for benefits for this first full-time hire.
Wise said he would prefer candidates with Firefighter Level 1 and 2 certifications and preferably EMS-qualified candidates (now referred to as EMR). He noted training opportunities occur regularly every two years in Farmington; the training is compensated for by the Fireman's Association but payroll during training is the town's responsibility. He added there is a protocol to reimburse a town if a trained firefighter is hired away.
Wise corrected an earlier statement by the town manager: Eustis and Kingfield do not have fully grant-funded positions, contrary to what had been stated at the previous meeting. He also said there are grant funding resources to explore but they require further study.
Wise provided a salary range for the proposed position of $52,000 to $60,000 depending on qualifications. Town Manager Garrett Corbin will work with Wise to finalize the advertisement language for the position and email it to Select Board members.
