Northfield council hears budget update, upcoming bids and equipment damage from recent storm

At its July 26 meeting the Village of Northfield Council received routine departmental reports covering the budget, procurement schedules and equipment damage sustained in a recent storm.
Finance Director and Clerk Jennifer Potvin told council the fiscal year and current budget "could not be going any better," expressed appreciation for department heads and said she received a request to post the budget and financial statements on the village website; she said she will work to accommodate that request and that a second budget amendment will be on the August agenda.
Engineer Daniel Collins said the bid opening for the Sagamore Road Drainage Improvements Project is scheduled for Aug. 3, 2023 and that the village expects two to four contractors to bid; he also set an Aug. 25 noon bid opening for generator quotes. Police Chief Brian Zajac reported the police station experienced a power surge during the recent storm that destroyed a 12‑ to 15‑year‑old booking camera system and that he is seeking replacement quotes.
Fire Lieutenant Robert Davet said station construction is ongoing; during the storm a fuse in the station generator melted leaving the station at half power, and the fuse has since been repaired. Davet also reported the department has three LUCAS mechanical CPR devices, one needs immediate replacement and a second likely will need replacing in one to two years; he noted trade‑in values for older devices are high. Councilmember Renell Noack reported follow‑up regarding hydrant maintenance: the service department is evaluating options including purchasing a stripping/sanding machine (estimated around $18,000) versus contracting sandblasting and painting (estimates cited around $30,000 to sandblast and another $30,000 to paint all hydrants). No formal action or funding decisions were recorded at the meeting.
Council scheduled no immediate vote on procurement beyond noting upcoming bid dates; department heads will carry forward replacement quotes and procurement steps as appropriate.
