Freedom Range Academy scales down Northfield plan; council told permit extension will be needed

Aaron Vaughn, speaking for Freedom Range Academy, presented a revised site plan to the Village of Northfield council on Aug. 23, saying the company reduced the project's size and scope because construction materials have cost more than expected.
Under the revised plan the building will be 12,458 square feet, down from the initially proposed 15,920 square feet; the number of bays will decrease from 20 to 12 and classroom footprints will be slightly larger. Vaughn said the developer plans to break ground in spring and anticipates construction will take about nine months.
Engineer Daniel Collins noted the Planning Commission approved the site plan on Oct. 19, 2022, and council approval followed on Nov. 22, 2022, so the developer will need an extension on the one-year permit to complete construction. Collins did not specify when the extension request would be filed; Vaughn indicated the company intends to proceed but must adjust its schedule to reflect the change in scope and rising material costs.
The council did not record a vote on the revised plan at the Aug. 23 meeting; the discussion focused on the revised square footage, bay reduction and the timetable. If an extension request is filed, it will be scheduled for further administrative or council action.
