Supervisor Root Ascue presented the resolution and thanked the county’s LGBTQ+ employee resource group and Public Health Director Elsa Jimenez for convening staff to ensure the declaration could coincide with Pride Month.
"If you are transgender, non‑binary, gender fluid, gender queer, or intersex, and you live or work here in Monterey County, you belong here," Supervisor Root Ascue said during the presentation. The resolution commits county resources to ensuring affirming care and workplace protections for employees and residents, and highlights continuing investments in Rainbow Connections and behavioral‑health supports.
The measure was presented as ceremonial and passed without formal opposition; staff and community members joined the board for a photo after the vote.
What’s next: supervisors noted the resolution is symbolic but said the county will follow with programmatic commitments and funding for behavioral‑health services and employee supports that align with the sanctuary declaration.
