Commissioners table proposal to charge $125 Board of Assessment Review application fee

Sagadahoc County commissioners unanimously tabled a request to set a $125 application fee for Board of Assessment Review appeals after concerns it would deter legitimate appeals and because no appeals have been filed recently.
The Sagadahoc County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 18 moved to table a proposal from the Board of Assessment Review to set an application fee of $125.
Administrator Amber Jones explained the fee was intended to cover insurance costs for site visits and required advertising when appeals are filed. Commissioners questioned whether the fee could dampen legitimate appeals given the high burden of proving unfair taxation and noted there have been no appeals filed since the administrator took office.
Commissioner Charles Crosby said he did not want to create a barrier to appeals and suggested using modest budgeted amounts to cover advertising and other costs instead of imposing a fee. Commissioner McPhee and Commissioner Steve August agreed to table the matter and revisit it if appeals increase.
The motion to table was seconded and passed unanimously. The item will return to the board if a change in circumstances prompts reconsideration.
