Sagadahoc County commissioners reduce Probate Register pay, approve $25,625 contingency for radio tower

Sagadahoc County Commissioners voted Nov. 7 in Bath to reduce the elected Probate Register’s salary and to use contingency funds to cover a shortfall on a county radio tower project.
Commissioner Stephen August moved after an executive session to reduce the Probate Register’s workweek from 40 hours to 20 hours and set the annual salary at $33,501, effective Dec. 1, 2024; the panel also voted to increase a part-time Probate Clerk’s hours from 20 to 29.5 per week, effective immediately. Commissioner Carol Grose seconded the motion; it passed by a 3-0 vote.
The salary and hours change followed an executive-session consultation with county counsel under Title 1 MRSA §405(6)(E), which the board invoked at the start of the meeting. The board recessed into executive session at 9:11 a.m. and returned at 10:23 a.m.
On infrastructure spending, Communications Director Mike Carter asked the commissioners to approve $25,625.24 from the commissioners’ FY25 contingency to address a shortfall on the radio tower project. Carter said the change order reflected an expanded scope for the Phippsburg tower to include potential space for cellular carriers and additional acquisition services by Black Diamond, including a Purchase & Sale agreement. Administrator Jones reminded the panel that the board previously approved a $35,000 ARPA allocation related to the project and that the commissioners’ contingency account is $100,000 and had not yet been tapped this fiscal year.
Commissioner August moved to approve using $25,625.24 from the contingency account to support the radio tower change order; Commissioner Crosby seconded the motion, and it passed 3-0.
The meeting concluded when Commissioner August moved to adjourn at 10:32 a.m.; Commissioner Grose seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
