Kewanee approves procurement to refurbish outdoor warning sirens

The Kewanee City Council on July 8 approved Bill 24-64, a resolution authorizing the mayor, city manager, fire chief and city clerk to execute agreements needed to procure supplies to refurbish and replace the city’s outdoor warning sirens. Councilmember Baker moved approval and Councilmember Komnick seconded; the motion passed 5-0.
Fire Chief Welgat told the council the city’s existing early-warning devices are “not adequate” and confirmed the low bidder listed in the procurement was the same company that previously briefed the council. He also said the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is developing a cell-phone alert app that would supplement siren coverage.
The resolution authorizes city officials to execute procurement documents with the selected vendor; council members did not record any amendments or conditions to the contract at the meeting. The measure passed unanimously and will allow staff to move forward with vendor negotiation and procurement steps.
