Kewanee council approves repairs to Fire Station #2, buys heavy rescue unit and awards Francis Park project

Council members voted 5-0 to allow city officials to execute agreements for repairs to Fire Station #2 after damage from a returning fire truck and to replace the station’s west roof after inspections found flaws. The council separated the roof work from the incident repairs so insurance can cover the damage while the city pays for maintenance and replacement.
The council also approved the purchase of a used heavy rescue unit intended to carry the hazardous-materials team’s equipment without requiring a separate trailer; the fleet manager and the fire chief inspected the vehicle and reported they were satisfied with its condition.
As part of an OSLAD grant project, the council awarded the Francis Park Improvements Project to Porter Brothers Construction, Inc., selecting the lowest responsible bidder. Staff noted there were large divergences among submitted bids and said they could not explain the reason for the variance.
Council members also approved an intergovernmental agreement with Kewanee Community School District 229 to replace the existing School Resource Officer agreement and add another SRO; council discussion indicated both the district and the city were pleased with the incoming officer. The meeting ended with a resolution affirming the mayor’s recommendations to fill vacancies on boards and commissions, including the Commission on Human Relations.
All listed measures passed on recorded 5-0 votes.
What happens next: Staff will execute the contracts and agreements authorized by the resolutions; insurance claims will be pursued for incident-related station damage where appropriate, and the Francis Park contractor is expected to proceed under the OSLAD grant terms.
