Kewanee officials outline $175,000 plan to repair Fire Station 2 after ladder-truck strike

Fire Chief Welgat told the Kewanee City Council on June 24 that Fire Station 2 suffered significant structural damage on June 4 when an aerial ladder truck struck the single support pillar between the garage doors.
Welgat said MSI crews responded quickly to shore up the building and prevent further damage, and structural engineers from Chamlin inspected the site and approved the stabilization work. The south side garage bay remains out of service, but the trucks can still enter from the north side and the housing portion of the building was unaffected.
Staff have issued a request for proposals for structural and cosmetic repairs; proposals are due July 12 and council members were told staff intends to present a resolution at the July 22 meeting authorizing the work. Welgat gave a projected repair cost of approximately $175,000 and a target completion date of October.
The council did not take any immediate vote on repairs at the June 24 meeting; Welgat’s update served to inform members and the public of the damage, temporary stabilization, and the planned procurement timeline. The city indicated the south garage bay is being kept out of use until repairs are completed.
The city’s next formal step is the planned July 22 resolution to authorize the selected contractor and financing approach for the repairs.
