Rome selectmen approve minutes, authorize rug service and hear Earth Day cleanup proposal

At their Feb. 9 meeting, the Rome Board of Selectmen approved minutes and a bi-weekly rug service contract, heard public commenters propose an April 26 Earth Day cleanup and a review of stipend vs. hourly pay, and received department updates including a requested warrant article on a fire-truck reserve discrepancy.
First Selectman Kelly Archer called the Town of Rome Board of Selectmen to order at 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 9. The board voted 3-0 to approve the minutes of the Jan. 27, 2026 meeting and later approved a recurring, bi-weekly rug service from Cintas for town departments.
During the public-comment period, Alice VanDerwerken asked the town to provide a dumpster for a proposed Earth Day cleanup inside the Community Center on April 26 and said she will supply newsletter submission deadlines to the town administrative assistant to help recruit contributors and advertisers. Joan Orr urged the board to review whether certain town positions should be paid by stipend or hourly pay by consulting current workers about hours spent, and she proposed a comprehensive road-maintenance spreadsheet for the coming year.
Town Clerk Julie Morrison outlined the duties associated with the positions she holds and said she will submit job-description copies to the Budget Committee for its review. Tax Collector and Treasurer Tammy Lyons said the town must send a Paid Family Medical Leave notification to all employees and that the town needs to name a contact person for that program after the upcoming town election; she also reported that the town’s 2025 tax maps are being updated on the website and requested that a warrant article be added to correct a discrepancy in the Fire Department Truck reserve account.
On other business, the board selected a cover photo for the Town Report (photo courtesy of Gail Labbe) and noted that warrant articles have been updated as part of budget preparations. First Selectman Archer moved to adjourn at 8:33 p.m.; Second Selectman Larry DiPietro seconded and the board adjourned 3-0. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Monday, Feb. 23 at 6:00 p.m.
