Mahtomedi council narrows parking ban, accepts floodplain finding and approves routine bills

Mahtomedi — The Mahtomedi City Council on June 2 unanimously approved a resolution establishing a no-parking restriction on the north side of Maple Street from Mahtomedi Avenue to Summit Avenue to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
Public Works Director Bob Goebel told the council the stretch near the trail had produced several “near misses,” and recommended no-parking signs at three locations. After discussion about impacts to neighbors and a recent ordinance limiting parking near driveways and mailboxes, the council removed two secondary locations from the proposal and approved Resolution No. 2026-16, leaving only the Maple Street restriction in place. Goebel said the city will continue to issue parking permits when exceptions are needed.
The council also unanimously accepted Resolution No. 2026-17, approving a technical evaluation of the regulatory flood protection elevation and flood fringe determination for a building-permit application at 1499 Bryant Avenue. City Engineer Nick Guilliams said the property lies in the General Floodplain District and that the proposed project meets the requirements of Mahtomedi City Code Section 11.05, Flood Plain Management.
In routine business the council approved its consent agenda, including Resolution No. 2026-18 accepting $252 in gifts for the Mahtomedi Fire Department from Phoneoke Karoke & Quinny's, awarded a $10,944.35 quote to Sir-Lines-A-Lot, LLC for 2026 long-line roadway striping, and approved a final pay voucher of $2,617.36 to Winberg Companies, LLC for the 2025 Parking Lot and Trails project. Council members also approved the bill list and prior meeting minutes.
City Administrator Scott Neilson told the council the city received a two-year water-efficiency grant totaling $14,000 to support rebates for low-flow toilets, Energy Star washing machines and WaterSense irrigation controllers. Neilson also reported the Metropolitan Council’s latest population estimate of 8,494 residents; staff member Hannah will review that figure for accuracy before state certification.
The meeting record shows Washington County Deputy Peterson also addressed the audience with a public-safety reminder about juveniles riding e-bikes and moto-bikes where prohibited and urged residents to secure homes and vehicles and report suspicious activity.
The council adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
