Superintendent John Suttie reported to the RSU 23 board on Nov. 19 that the district had recorded one positive in-school COVID-19 case, and that the person was already in quarantine. He said several students quarantined as a result tested negative and would return to in-person learning soon.
"For a long time, we were building this plane while we were flying it. I don’t feel that way anymore. The plane is built," Suttie said, describing the district’s current COVID-19 safety procedures and expressing hope for a vaccine in the spring that could allow a more normal fall schedule.
Suttie told the board that RSU 23 is currently seventh on the state Department of Education’s list for new-school funding and that the state plans to fund up to 16 projects in this funding cycle; he said RSU 23 should be in range for approval of a project design in two to three years. He also acknowledged a donation from the Lessard family of Hannaford gift cards to families in need.
Suttie cited a health expert, "Dr. Shah," saying schools were doing a better job containing spread inside than outside, and that "kids are safer in school than they are outside," a point Suttie said the district is using to justify continued in-person learning where possible.
