Council members told the meeting they have received repeated reports of missed residential trash pickups over several weeks and directed the village administrator to seek bids for a new waste-hauler.
Members described a pattern of failures from the current vendor (Priority Waste and predecessor contracts over the past years), including multiple missed collection days that prompted resident complaints. Council discussed the village contract’s limitations: the current agreement (in place in various forms since 2014) does not permit the village to withhold payments in the event of service failures, leaving legal options limited to breach claims and a 7‑day cure period written into the contract.
Given the recent escalation, the administrator was asked to solicit bids for alternative providers. Council members noted other municipalities have pursued legal remedies (withholding payments or suing) when contracts permitted it; Wolverine Lake’s contract currently lacks those withholding clauses, so procuring a new contract with stronger enforcement provisions was discussed as part of the next-step strategy.
Council acknowledged that switching haulers could increase fees because the village’s current price was comparatively favorable; members said negotiating stronger service guarantees and remedies should be priorities in any new contract. The administrator will prepare an RFP and report back on interested vendors and procurement options.
