Vernon County health officer cites WI DHS Hantavirus advisory; respiratory viruses at low activity

Amy Kleiber, Vernon County Health Officer, told the Vernon County Board of Health on May 13 that the Wisconsin Department of Health Services had issued a Health Alert Advisory about Hantavirus and briefed the board on transmission and clinical symptoms. Kleiber said the advisory included an overview of a cruise-ship–linked outbreak referenced in the WI DHS notice.
Kleiber also reviewed statewide respiratory-virus surveillance shared with the board, reporting that activity levels for COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza are currently low in Wisconsin. The update was presented as part of the department’s routine communicable-disease briefing.
Board members asked clarifying questions during the update and were told staff will continue routine surveillance and share any new Health Alert guidance with local providers and the public. No formal board action was taken on the advisory during the meeting.
