RSU 23 superintendent reports 11 COVID cases; district to install touchless bathrooms using CRF funds

John Suttie, superintendent of RSU 23, told the board Dec. 17 that the district experienced 11 positive COVID‑19 tests after Thanksgiving and that all three schools were classified as outbreaks. He said district staff met with CDC officials, who "are telling us that kids are safer in schools" and urged the district "to do what we can to keep them open."
Suttie defined an outbreak as three or more linked cases in a week and reported that no additional cases have occurred since the meetings with CDC staff. He credited the district’s planning, early PPE purchases and staff efforts for helping manage the situation.
The superintendent also announced that Waltz and Sons will install touchless bathroom fixtures in all three RSU 23 schools during the Christmas break, and said the district will use Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF) to cover the installations. Separately, he said the district received gift‑card donations that will benefit about 70 families and a cash contribution from Biddeford Saco Savings.
Suttie closed his report by thanking custodial staff, food‑service workers, maintenance, bus drivers, the technology team and the education association for their work during a difficult year and said the district looks forward to vaccine distribution and a return toward normal operations.
