Residents urge access to practice fields as Mendota updates parks and streets

During public comment at the Mendota City Council meeting on Feb. 3, resident Marvin Villanueva asked the council to consider allowing a local soccer league to use the grass portion of the baseball diamonds at Rojas-Pierce Park for practice while the Danny Trejo Soccer Field and the new Rojas-Pierce soccer field remain closed for rehabilitation.
Council members and staff discussed the prior condition of the Danny Trejo field, the city’s investment in repairs and construction of a new soccer field at Rojas-Pierce Park, and confirmed both soccer fields will remain closed until they are ready for use in the spring. The council congratulated Villanueva’s team for winning their league championship.
In council reports and department updates the council heard multiple project updates: Council Member Libertad “Liberty” Lopez said the Pool Park Rehabilitation Project is aiming to open by Easter and noted installation of shade structures; Mayor Victor Martinez listed planned street projects including Divisadero and Inez Street reconstruction, the 2nd Street stormwater improvement and 7th Street rehabilitation, a citywide railroad improvement project and a planned alley paving project. City Engineer Osborn provided status updates on the Citywide Railroad Improvement Project, the Divisadero Street Reconstruction Project, the 5th and Quince Street Reconstruction Project and the 2025 Local Street Reconstruction Project and mentioned planned housing developments. Council discussed sidewalk condition and maintenance responsibility along Oller Street and asked staff to share the Safe Routes to School Master Plan with the council.
City Manager Gonzalez also updated the council on the Community Center Project, the gas line project at Vista Square and Mendota Community Corporation events including a charitable golf tournament, a Silva Strong 5K and an inaugural soccer tournament. No formal actions were taken on these items at the meeting; some projects will require future staff reports or agenda items.
