At the Committee of the Whole meeting on Oct. 25, trustees addressed residents' concerns about the status and safety of the Robbins Community Center after reports of fumes.
Trustee George Brewton, chair of Public Property, said citizens had called claiming the village and the board had closed the community center and stated that assertion was "not accurate" in the committee's report. Mayor Darren E. Bryant said he visited the center and met with President Roberson, who reported "major fumes". Bryant said the village may pursue either a land swap with the Park District or take over operation of the center.
Supervisor Stewart noted that most community centers are run by the municipality, which hires the director and that the director hires staff. During public comments, Mrs. Murphy expressed disappointment in how the community center's status had been portrayed and requested a meeting with the mayor; Bernard Ward agreed that a decision needs to be made and criticized the village's historical upkeep of the facility.
The minutes record discussion and options but do not show a vote or formal directive to begin a land swap or takeover at that meeting. Trustees did not record an action plan with deadlines in the minutes.
