Committee opts for painted safety treatment instead of costly raised crosswalk
Summary
Rather than fund a $25,000 raised crosswalk on Central Street, the committee voted to replace the line item with a $3,500 painted/marked crosswalk and signage to improve visibility and safety.

The committee replaced a planned $25,000 raised crosswalk on Central Street with a lower-cost painted treatment and signage estimated at about $3,500.
Staff explained the painted approach includes advanced pavement markings, high-visibility inlay colors for the crosswalk, 15-foot hash-marked no-parking zones at each corner, and signage to alert drivers. Committee members accepted that painted treatments require periodic maintenance but concluded the lower near-term cost and reduced plowing complications made the painted option preferable this year. "This is a safety issue," a member said; "$3,500 is something we can probably absorb between now and July." The motion to remove the raised-crosswalk allocation and fund painting instead passed unanimously.
Members also asked staff to plan for fall repainting and to consider the upcoming state bridge project that will affect pedestrian patterns near the crossing.
