Town Manager John explained the proposal: the family would pay about $9,800 in back taxes and fees and the mortgage — created in consultation with the town attorney — would secure town interests by obligating cleanup work over a two-year period. "When $9,800 is collected, assuming you approve the quitclaim deed tonight... we'd sign the mortgage and we would file with the registry," John said.
Board members said the approach balances the town’s interest in ensuring the property is cleaned up while allowing family members to retain the parcel and do the work through sweat equity and assistance. The motion to approve the quitclaim deed and mortgage as presented passed by unanimous voice vote.
