Curriculum committee outlines civics graduation option and public‑meeting requirement

He said one required option for students to meet the civics requirement is an assessment modeled on the naturalization test, administered in eighth and 12th grades; another option the committee is working to include would allow students to attend a public meeting as evidence of civic engagement.
Joshua said the district currently selects a minimum of 10 assessment questions at each grade level (eighth and 12th) and records results internally; parents may request individual student results. He described efforts to make curricular materials publicly available on the district website and noted the district is preparing to review social studies materials under new state standards expected to move through the state board later in the year.
The committee opened a short public hearing during the report; no public testimony was presented. Joshua said the committee will continue to coordinate with other staff (Mr. Galla and Mr. Grummer) to facilitate the public‑meeting option and will provide finalized documents and minutes to the board and any interested members of the public.
