Superintendent reports on multicultural education survey, Beef in Schools and curriculum changes

Superintendent Drew Billeter updated the Southwest Public Schools Board of Education on curriculum, nutrition and facility matters at the Feb. 10 meeting in Bartley.
Billeter said he recently distributed a questionnaire to teachers for the district’s annual report on multicultural education to assess how diverse perspectives are integrated into classroom instruction. He said the district will use results to guide future initiatives and programs that support inclusivity and cultural awareness.
Billeter reported the district has begun serving beef through the 'Beef in Schools' program and noted additional processing dates scheduled for Feb. 25 and March 3; he acknowledged donors who supported the program. He also reported a Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service (CDARS) renewal took place on Feb. 6, with another CDARS account maturing on Feb. 27.
On facilities, Billeter said the district has received a quote for elementary school roof repairs following hail damage and that local banks have signaled interest in contributing funds toward a gym video board to be used at wrestling meets, graduations and other events.
Principal Matt Springer told the board spring MAPS testing is approaching; he noted seniors are exempt from spring MAPS testing. Springer said the district plans to introduce a Senior Seminar class for 2025–26 to help seniors prepare for post‑graduation tasks such as scholarship applications and resumes. Billeter also said the state is mandating a Digital Media class beginning in 2025–26; the district will add the course to meet that requirement.
The meeting adjourned at 8:31 p.m.; the board set its next regular meeting for March 10, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at Southwest Junior‑Senior High School in Bartley.
